In the beginning of my portrait career I offered a studio newborn photoshoot option as well as in-home lifestyle sessions. After a few years of offering the two sessions types, I quickly realized that the quality of images I can produce in a controlled studio setting is just far superior to what I can provide photographing in people’s homes. This is the reason I decided to offer only studio newborn photoshoots…there are just so many more benefits that I can offer.

Studio Newborn Sessions Have Better Quality Lighting
Photography is all about lighting which is made even more critical when photographing inside a building. The lighting of an image is everything…it creates the “mood,” it can help convey emotion, isolate a subject, etc. The majority of houses just do not have enough lighting that can produce quality images. Yes, all houses have windows, but windows come in a variety of sizes, roof pitches and/or covered porches or balconies which all impact the amount of light that comes through. Additionally, rooms a client has requested the photoshoot take place in may not have the right type of light which will inevitably reduce the quality of the image.
My studio has tall, floor to ceiling windows on one of the walls so even on overcast, dreary days, there is still enough light to work with and I have never had to cancel a session due to weather.
Beautiful Decor Helps Compliment the Subjects
Purposeful studio sets help compliment the subject matter. My studio is styled in neutral, earth tones and includes elements that create interest without distracting from the main subject matter (YOU!). While there is a benefit to being photographed in your own home for nostalgic purposes, there are likely items in the home that will draw the eye away from the main focal point of the photo. For example, an outlet with several black cords running from it…this seems like a minor detail, but trust me when I tell you that it will be an eyesore in the final portrait.

More Accessibility to Newborn Props and Accessories
I offer a huge selection of wardrobe options for the family along with various props, wraps and accessories that clients get to use during their studio sessions. When I traveled to clients’ homes, I could only bring a small bag of these options, limiting the variety of looks I could create. When newborn photoshoots happen at my studio, many different wraps, outfits, headbands are incorporated to help create variety within the gallery. The studio wardrobe alone is a feature my clients probably love the best!
While I do love the personal meaning behind portraits taken in a families own home, the overall look and quality of a beautiful studio setting just far exceeds anything else.
