With all of the new baby planning that you are likely doing, I try to make your maternity studio session as smooth as possible. I provide all the styling needs for the mama-to-be which include a range of thoughtfully curated studio dresses that photograph beautifully and compliment all body types. The last thing you need to worry about is figuring out what to wear! I also provide detailed styling guidance for men with links to my favorite clothing items, taking the guesswork on what the rest of the family is going to wear. While styling is an important part of any maternity studio session, there are still some other tips I share with clients to help ensure a successful time together.

Be Mindful of Nail Color
This may seem like a minor detail, however, with the number of close-up shots I take that include hands, this is an important one! Bright colors can attract attention away from the main focus (your baby!) which is why I recommend either no polish or a neutral color like pale pinks, gray, beige, etc.
Consider Getting Makeup and Hair Professionally Done
Maternity studio sessions are a way expectant mother’s get to “treat themselves” to beautiful portraits that document this special journey. I recommend all my clients consider getting their makeup and hair professionally done because you and the little soul stirring in that lovely bump are the main event…so why not pamper yourself!? This is definitely not a requirement though and just something fun to add on for the special day.
Be Thoughtful on Undergarments
If you are including intimate maternity posing into your maternity session, you will need to be thoughtful on the undergarments you are wearing since they will be fully visible. Regarding colors, I like to stay away from Black so the portraits don’t skew boudoir which is not the goal of intimate maternity posing. My goal is to place more focus on the natural beauty of a pregnant body, posed strategically verses sexually. For this reason, I prefer clients wear earth-toned colors (brown, rust, mustard, beige, dusty rose, etc.). This is a beautiful maternity undergarment set.
Don’t Forget About the Feet!
This tip is relevant for both males and females who will be in attendance at the maternity studio session because I prefer to photograph clients barefoot. I give my clients advanced notice of this so they have time to prep their feet appropriately and it’s definitely something the men appreciate! Why barefoot you ask? Because some of my posing takes place on a bed and bare feet naturally compliment that setting. Also, socks often end up bringing more attention to the feet which isn’t what I want the focal point to be.
